Charlie's Bakery & Chinese Restaurant stands as a flavorful gem in the heart of Anchorage, blending the authentic tastes of Chinese and Asian cuisine with the delightful offerings of a bakery. Located at 2729 C St, this spot seamlessly balances the comforting appeal of classic dishes with the artistry of freshly baked sweets, creating a truly comprehensive dining experience.
From the moment you step inside, the clean, no-nonsense atmosphere invites you to focus on what matters most—the food. This is a place where the pace is just right; neither rushed nor sluggish, allowing you to savor each bite. Whether you're craving the tender, savory richness of Mongolian Beef or the delicate, perfectly textured Szechuan Style Spicy Won Ton, Charlie’s delivers vibrant, bold flavors that excite the palate without overwhelming it.
Among the must-try dishes are the Kalbi (Beef Ribs) with Vegetables & Steamed Rice, a hearty and satisfying entrée that boasts a balanced, smoky depth, and the BBQ Eel (Unagi Kababyaki), which offers a luscious glaze that melts over fluffy steamed rice. If you're in the mood for something with a little kick, the Black Pepper Steak with Fried Rice & Vegetable combines tender cuts with a robust peppery punch, all perfectly accompanied by flavorful fried rice and fresh vegetables.
For those who love variety, the menu’s sweeping selection—from Pot Stickers and Boiled Dumplings to Chicken Curry and Kung Bao Shrimp with Shrimp Fried Rice—ensures there’s something for every craving. The textures are consistently on point, as one diner noted, with each bite offering a satisfying contrast between tender meat, crisp vegetables, and perfectly cooked rice or noodles.
Dessert lovers will find Charlie’s bakery side equally alluring. Their cakes, lightly sweetened and topped with fresh fruit, strike a delicate balance that highlights freshness over cloying sugar. This is a welcome relief for those who appreciate desserts that feel refined rather than heavy. The Egg Tart and Sesame Balls are popular picks, offering flaky, golden crusts and rich, subtle flavors that round out the meal beautifully.
While some guests note a food court vibe and occasional minor lapses in staff energy or seating cleanliness, the overall experience remains warm and inviting. Service is attentive and quick, even during busy lunch hours, where the flow of orders keeps the kitchen energized and the food arriving at an ideal pace.
Charlie's Bakery & Chinese Restaurant is more than just a place to eat; it’s a destination for those who want to explore Chinese and Asian flavors in a comfortable, straightforward setting. Whether you're sharing a meal with friends or treating yourself to a thoughtfully made dessert, Charlie’s promises consistently delicious food that keeps guests coming back time and time again.
Came in for lunch with friends, and we all enjoyed our experience. Food was flavorful, and the textures were perfect. The environment is very clean, and the food came out at a good pace. I got a desert to go but it wasn't to my taste, it wasn't sweet at all. Not a complaint, but just a warning if you're expecting a sweet treat.
Love this place. Charlie’s Bakery is my go-to spot for sesame chicken, and their whole roasted duck (available on Saturdays) is absolutely worth planning around. I always bring new family members here when they’re visiting because it never disappoints — everything is consistently delicious. Their desserts are just as impressive. The cakes are light, not overly sweet, and topped with fresh fruit, making them perfectly balanced. The buns, breads, and pastries are also excellent. This is one of those places you keep coming back to.
The food was decent. I got the BBQ beef short ribs—chewy, as you'd expect from this cut, but they could’ve used a bit more flavor to really shine. The rice and veggie mix on the side was fresh and tasty, which helped round out the plate. The place has more of a food court vibe, and the table I sat at was a little sticky. The staff seemed a bit tired but still friendly. Overall, it didn’t quite live up to the hype for me, but I’d come back to try a different dish and give it another shot.
I came in a busy time for lunch but the line was quick so I have no problem with it. First thing first you have to do is look for the menus they put on their wall and order it from cashier. You have to do it quickly because the people behind you keep coming
Excellent customer service, fast, clean great atmosphere. I got a braise beef soup, mocha cake and shu mai. The soup was alright it was lacking some flavors it tasted bland to me, the cake was perfect moist and soft, it wasn’t too sweet it was just perfect and the shu mai was good. I got the pork and shrimp and it was good. My second time here and it’s always packed, I’ll need to try more food on the menu’s. I’ll go back for another visit
Ordered the Bean curd roll, spicy seafood noodle soup, sesame salad with chicken and beef chow mein. The bean curd roll was so tasty and was amazing! The beef chow mein was also noteworthy! However, the sesame salad was too sweet, though the chicken wasn’t bad. The spicy seafood noodle soup lacked flavor and was not super spicy. Also got eggs tarts, but they were not super flaky… This restaurant is still pretty nice and is very affordable.
